The Importance of Rest

I don’t know about you but I tend to take sleep for granted.

Until it is elusive.

When a deadline looms, something stressful takes up space in my thoughts or my allergies are giving me a fit; sleep doesn’t come as naturally as it usually does for me.  And, I almost immediately begin feeling the effects of not getting enough rest.

My post nasal drip turns into bronchitis.  Or I wake up with a tension headache. Or I feel my blood pressure rise and my pulse quicken.

God set an example of rest from the very beginning.  I doubt the Creator of the Universe actually needed to rest.  But, He thought rest important enough to model the setting aside of time specifically for it.  Rest is crucial for our health, especially as busy women.

The medical community also touts the importance of rest and the benefits of getting enough of it.

  • boosts your immune system
  • improves your mood
  • lowers blood pressure
  • increases cognitive function

With the multitasking nature of womanhood- wife, mom, sister, friend, coworker…we tend to put ourselves and our needs {including the need for rest} at the bottom of our priority list.  This is a mistake that can have serious health implications.

A chronic lack of sleep can contribute to the development of diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic health conditions.

So, what are some ways you can help yourself get enough sleep?  Here are some things that work for me:

  1. Turn off the electronics.  It’s hard for me to unplug sometimes. But, turning off the TV, the laptop and even my smartphone at least a half hour before shutting my eyes helps me rest.
  2. Journal.  I have to empty my brain before I sleep or my thoughts will keep me awake.  I find this very therapeutic as well when something is heavy on my mind or heart.
  3. Make your room sleep friendly.  My husband and I had to install heavy curtains in our bedroom because a neighbor’s outdoor lights were interrupting our sleep.  Invest in good pillows and a comfortable mattress.
  4. Breathe in relaxation.  I diffuse lavender in our bedroom for about an hour before bed.  You can also rub a few drops on the back of your neck for a similar relaxing effect.

The Essential Oil brand that I recommend using is doTERRA. I support this brand for a number of reasons, the main one being that they are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade. These oils are pure natural aromatic compounds extracted from plants. They do not contain fillers or additives, which allows the user to receive maximum benefit from nature’s natural healers.

  1. I also love journaling–it does contribute to a good night of sleep!

  2. Great ideas, Melissa! I’ve been trying to get more AND better rest lately and many of things have been helpful for me as well! And lavender is a miracle worker, right?!
