TTT- When you don’t get it

The van door opens and a sweaty, smiling, stinky boy climbs in.  I prompt him to put on his seatbelt as he excitedly tells me about his evening.

“My legs are numb, I think I dislocated my thumb and I have a headache from my head hitting the mat…man, wrestling is awesome!”

One of the things I have come to realize about parenting boys is that I will never understand the way their minds work.  However, I do know that boys, especially teenage ones, need an outlet for all their pent-up energy and hormones.  It is important for us mama’s to remember that whether we “get it” or not, we need to provide opportunities for our son’s to be engaged in physical activity, competition and fun~ even if, for the love of all that is holy, we can’t see what is fun about physical pain!

Are there things about your children that you just don’t get?

  1. Fart jokes, farting on each other, smelling each other’s farts … the list could go on and on. I just don’t get it. I have finally managed to get them to say “Excuse me,” but it loses a little meaning when it is said between giggles and gagging sounds.

  2. Oh YES that sounds JUST like a boy!  Our 19yr old son wrestled in  junior high and high school, and it was funny the things he would come home saying. 🙂  Our boys now are in Karate and I hear things like “That guy hit me right in the middle of my helmet and even smashed my nose a little. You shoulda seen it. It was awesome!”  Okay son, if you say so.

  3. As a mother of 2 calm girls (one married and one in college) I struggle with the busyness & the goofiness of our boys..(14 &6). Oh my the “toot” jokes began b4 the first one could really could even say it, he is now 14 and believe me I DONT GET IT!!! Farting & burping contests send me over the edge. I didn’t get it growing up with all brothers and years and years later. I still don’t.
Differences in children, girls and boys amaze me. Yet their similarities crack me up too. How is it one is so compassionate about the other and the other knows it and takes full advantage of it?!! One boy is a sports nut and the other is my computer geek/bookworm.
They are fearfully and wonderfully made and I am so thankful they are mine.  At the end of the day I am worn out……  after they have fallen asleep and I check on them I realize how very blessed I am!!
