Come and Follow Me…

and I will make you fishers of men.  Matthew 4:19

This verse got me through last week.  Last week was an amazing week with God, but it moved at breakneck speed.  I felt like I had to hold on tight and just trust that I was headed in the right direction.  I wrote on facebook at one point that God was moving so fast in my life I felt like I might get whiplash.

What I gleaned the most from this verse, what comfort availed me in the few words written was that Jesus did not say come and follow me….

  • when you think you are ready
  • when you have everything figured out
  • when you have a plan
  • if you feel like it
  • if you have time
  • if it is convenient
  • if you agree with the direction
  • if you understand where I am headed
  • when you feel competent
  • when you feel adequate

He simply stated: Come and follow me AND I will make you fishers of men.  Matthew 4:19  He will make us into what He needs us to be to fulfill His purpose.  I don’t have to do anything but follow Him and yield to His will.  He will do the rest.

I encourage you to yield to God.  Go and follow Him.  Tell Him you are ready for whatever He has waiting for you.  And, then hold on!   He has things in store that you never could have imagined!

  1. This is the third time in two days that I've read or heard someone say the same idea. (Maybe God is trying to tell me something!) As long as we live in this world, we'll never be perfect. God can use us anyway, just as we are. Thank you for writing this!

We really have to trust him, don't we?

  3. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but every time I've ever heard or read this verse I've always thought, “Yes, yes, I know, I know…I need to witness to others.” (add sigh here) I've never thought of it as a call to let Him turn us into what He needs to fulfill His purpose. I'm ashamed of myself for not realizing that. Thanks for sharing this all-important truth.

  4. Amen!
