Pen to Paper

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services (report released in 2007) approximately 64 million Americans suffer from insomnia- a disorder characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. In response to this growing societal problem the American Psychological Association (APA) conducted a study asking Americans what is keeping them up at night. 74% of respondents cited work as the reason tied with money. Workload came in third at 66% and children next at 64%.
I think all of these reasons can be summed up with one word- stress. The fast paced, multi-tasking world in which we live encourages a lifestyle of hectic, almost frenetic schedules and the end result is that we end up feeling worn out and on the verge of burning out. Clearing your life and mind of the clutter (the things you have to do tomorrow, the things you forgot to do today, etc) will go a long way in helping you and your body wind down for a good night’s sleep.
One way to clear the clutter in your mind is to write it out. Start a journal. Don’t edit yourself- just vomit all the thoughts swirling around in your brain onto the paper. Trust me, you will feel better when they are out of your brain. The thoughts will hold much less power and intensity once out of your mind. Sometimes by the time you get the thoughts out on paper, the simple act of writing has decreased your stress.
There are many other strategies you can use to calm down and de-clutter your mind. But journaling is the one that works best for me.

  1. Good one. I’m bookmarking this for later for sure!
